Let’s talk about periods

Menstruation is something which happens to all women and yet is often a difficult topic to discuss. This is a real shame as it makes solving problems and educating people about their choices really challenging. One of the major issues around this is that we never talk about what happens to all those tampons and pads when they are disposed of. Where do they go? How long do they last? I have certainly been guilty of not even asking those questions, let alone the more important ones such as ‘What damage do they cause?’ and ‘What alternatives are there?’.

Mixed bean chilli recipe

This chilli may not look beautiful but it is a quick and easy go to meal for us. It takes a little bit of planning because of the dried beans but it never puts me off and is such a rewarding, warming meal that I always make loads and eat it for lunch for the rest of the week. You can always replace the dried beans with tinned to speed things up.

Cling film

Recently I had a wonderful discussion with a family member who told me they had bought reusable stretch wrap to cover their bowls so they would no longer need to use cling film. Although a non-plastic solution such as beeswax or vegan wraps, or using containers with lids would be better, this was definitely a step in the right direction and I was really pleased to hear that the message about the damage caused by plastic was leading them to make changes in their life.

Hot cross buns recipe

Easter is approaching and that means hot cross buns are on all the shelves. I am always disappointed with shop bought hot cross buns, apart from the fact that they are packaged in single use plastic, they are also nowhere near as tasty as this homemade version. Although this is a bit of effort the end result is well worth it. I ended up doing these over most of a day to make sure there was plenty of time for the buns to rise. Almost as soon as they came out of the oven, Rob walked in the front door and promptly ate one, they are just too tasty to resist.
