Five things you might think are recyclable…but aren’t

Does anyone else find recycling just a little bit confusing? I can’t be the only one. I am fully supportive of the idea that as households, we should sort our rubbish rather than leaving it to someone else, but I think we all need a bit more detail about what can and can’t go into each of our bins. Part of the problem is that there are so many different types of packaging materials we use these days that for the Council to give us clear information would require a small book. Of course, the ideal solution is that we have entirely reusable packaging and don’t have to throw anything away but, let’s be realistic.

Beware Biodegradables!

There has been a lot of talk about ‘biodegradable plastics’ recently and it is being touted by many businesses as the solution to the problem of single use plastics. But this term ‘biodegradable’ seems to me to be misleading people and, when you dig a bit deeper, it isn’t necessarily any better than the original plastic material! In this post I look at the different types of ‘biodegradable plastics’ to see whether they are in fact better, the same, or worse than the current plastics being used.

Cling film

Recently I had a wonderful discussion with a family member who told me they had bought reusable stretch wrap to cover their bowls so they would no longer need to use cling film. Although a non-plastic solution such as beeswax or vegan wraps, or using containers with lids would be better, this was definitely a step in the right direction and I was really pleased to hear that the message about the damage caused by plastic was leading them to make changes in their life.
