I must admit to having been guilty in the past of complacency around my packaging. If the packaging was labelled ‘recyclable’ or ‘biodegradable’ that used to be enough to satisfy any concerns I had about its environmental impact. I was shocked and appalled to learn that when a product is labelled ‘biodegradable’ it does not necessarily mean it will break down. I wanted to explore the problem of ‘biodegradable’ plastic in this article.
Wales is a pretty amazing country and it doesn’t always shout about it. Although I’m not Welsh, my husband is and almost all of our immediate family live in Wales now. Since living here, I am regularly impressed and humbled by the incredible work being done. From individuals making a difference in their local communities, to politicians making ground breaking political changes, Wales has a lot to be proud of.
Here it is, our first blog post!
We thought it only fitting to begin our blog journey with the very reason we chose to open a zero waste shop…plastic. We have had a few people ask us why we have chosen to open this shop and I hope this article will help clear up exactly what the problem is that we are trying to address.
This is a quick introduction to Robin and Chloe. We are the founders of Natural Weigh and are incredibly excited to be embarking on this journey.
Robin has a background in marine science. He has worked for the government fisheries laboratory for many years and has seen first hand the plastic problem in our seas and oceans. Robin is a bit of an adrenaline junkie and loves spending time in natural environments, whether it be surfing or rock climbing, walking or cycling, he is keen. The only thing to mar these trips into the outdoors is the litter which is ever present.
Chloe has worked in environmental policy for the last 4 years, working with administrations from the European Commission to the Welsh Government. Chloe has a passion for our natural world and the wildlife in it and hates to see the suffering caused by plastic pollution.
We are very fortunate to be able to start this shop and also very grateful for the support of our friends and family in helping us to make this happen.
